This infuriates me and is so indicative of all of the problems that were discussed in today’s amazing #womenonyoutube gathering. Ben’s continued insistence that he understands women on youtube, and women in general more than the women themselves understand the world in which they function and the struggles they face makes me want to be physically sick.
I was working all day today so completely missed Ben’s frankly disgusting interchange with Kayley but honestly I can’t say that I’m surprised. It’s something that we have seen from him and from so many who repeatedly decide that they know what the problem is and how to solve it, the problem of the 17% and the 77 to the dollar and the rape threats and poor comments. For all the sarcasm and the “obviously I didn’t mean that”, this just goes to show that Ben does truly believe women aren’t quote unquote successful on youtube (and fuck that, I’m sitting in a room full of women who are extremely successful on YouTube) because they’re not making content that is good enough.
Well, his content (including his twitter) isn’t good or bad. It’s fucking damaging and perpetuates horrible attitudes that distract us from the real problem.
I’m so sad to see this on the same day as all of the wonderful #womenonyoutube discussion, but in a way it could not be better timing because it just shows us how much more work there is to do.
So let’s get to work.
