AUGUST 2008: Author John Green and his brother Hank assemble hundreds of nerdfighters in the Winter Garden at Harold Washington Library Center! Check them out in their fantastic Teen Volume t-shirts! Were YOU there for the excitement?
I was there. That was the first time I ever met John and Hank :)
I was there too! It was the first time I met Karen Kavett (also a bunch of other people I remain friends with today). This is also where I realized I could sell my music and people would buy it, which (with input from Alan) morphed into DFTBA Records. It was a big day for me.
How were we ever so young?
(This was also the first time I met Rosianna, who is now my assistant, and the first time we really understood the power of nerdfighter gatherings, and it happened at the Chicago Public Library, one of the first places to get behind my novels in a big institution-wide way, and wow, what an important day in our lives.)
You boys look so BLOND.
Anyway yeah this day was crazy and amazing and remains very very important to me.
Also I’m very proud that I still own Hank’s Songs From Hank’s Pants: Terminus Edition CD.

I will return to Ryan Gosling now.
I am always so happy that I picked up LFA in the bookshop that day because the long and winding road from then til now brought me an amazing mentor, a terrific boss, and one of the most important friendships I have ever had.
Happy birthday, John.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
This leads up to my favourite part in the book (the ruined ruins) and it makes me feel a very intense sense of longing for what I wish my relationship with my parents had been. My mum is many things that drive me so crazy and upset me and so on but she’s also unreservedly enthusiastic and always trying to get us to do things as a family. And the 14th July, today, Bastille Day, is her birthday. And I know she misses my dad a lot and that she wishes we could all go on a picnic or something. But I still love this bit so much, even though it makes me so sad. And today was kind of a beautiful day.
do you guys wanna know how I looked up this quote? I vaguely remembered it but couldn’t quite recall all of it, so I went to google and typed in “shitty mirrors john green”
